Motor Shows are home to the most beautiful cars you can imagine, swooping profiles with nothing to disturb the gorgeous lines. We fall in love with vehicles here, but unfortunately between the motor show stand and the road are an army of accountants and officials with a love for rules and budgets.
This process will never change and if we’re honest, it’s not that bad, is it? Having butterfly doors sounds cool but when you can’t open them in a parking space you’ll resent the designer. Witnessing these cars on a stand then is the safest way to enjoy them. Geneva is the best place to observe these gorgeous designs and futuristic gadgets before they’re seen on our cars in 10 years’ time.
BMW M8 Gran Coupe
BMW’s M division creates some extremely popular models, the M3 and M5 have been favourites for decades and the M2, despite being the baby M car, is believed the offer the best driving experience in the range. The X5 and X6 M models are there to satisfy the market, fast, luxury SUVs are high in demand so to not offer these would be stupid. BMW have now decided it’s time to compete in the luxury coupe market too, Mercedes have recently released their four door AMG GT. BMW’s response then, is the M8.
The old 8 Series was never treated to the M makeover, this new take on the classic then seems perfect on paper. They’ve nailed the proportions and stance in the new car, it really looks sinister. The car will feature at least 600BHP according to early reports, meaning the Bentley Continental GT could even be in its sights.
Porsche Mission E
Officially, the car on show was a concept. However, you’re free to fall in love with the design as both the concept and the production cars were developed side by side. The production version is set to go on sale in 2019. This is definitely not an SUV, think of it as a V90 Cross Country. A lifted estate. The car features two electric motors producing more than 600hp. Mauer, the designer of this car, has implemented typical Porsche design elements perfectly, the low hood and broad hips are characteristically Porsche. The chunky tires and raised ride height give you confidence that this will be just as capable off road as it is bound to be on it.
2019 Jaguar I-Pace
This car could be one of the most significant production cars at the show this year. While the Germans and Italians are flaunting their beautiful concepts and intelligent designs, Jaguar have taken a car you can buy today. The 394hp, all-wheel drive Brit is available to purchase from Jaguar. The SUV body isn’t just for show, height adjustable suspension means the Jag can wade in water up to 20 inches deeps. While this might not compete with Land Rover, it’s certainly a statement. They’ve seen Tesla’s Model X and want to take it on, the electric market is certainly heating up.
‘Motor shows really are a great way to see into the future. The ground-breaking technology that features in the hottest cars on display is often the kind of stuff that we’ll see in our cars 10 years from now!’ Marshal Kent, LRC 4X4.
